Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, indicating initiation and new beginnings. It is a movable fire sign, with the adaptability to change and the ability to pivot quickly when situations arise. Aries is also the baby of the zodiac, meaning they can leave people hanging with their inability to follow through on their actions, often starting something but not completing it. Ruled by Mars, they are competitive, ambitious, driven and futuristic. They can also be impulsive and impatient, jumping into anything without forethought.
Ashwini, the first nakshatra, is symbolized by the two headed horseman and is ruled by Ketu. The mythology behind Ashwini is through the story of the Sun and his wife, Sanjana. See here for more details. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon. Ketu represents the bottom half of the serpent and has no head. It is a mist we can’t see through and where we feel things are always missing. Ketu indicates detachment and as the ruling planet of Ashwini, it denotes a separation from the material world to seek a connection with something larger than ourselves, as true healing comes through the spiritual plane. In addition, it is almost ironic to note that Ashwini is symbolized by a head (as well as Aries) but Ketu has no head, indicating that healing comes not from logic or analytics but through intuition and spirituality. Because Ketu has an element of mystery, there can be a secretive side to this nakshatra.
Jupiter will be in what’s called “gadanta,” which is the transition from a water sign (Pisces) to a fire sign (Aries). As Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and Aries is the first sign, this gandanta is even more significant as it is a strong indication of the power of new beginnings, especially since it follows a new moon, which signifies a fresh start.
Jupiter will be aspected by Saturn and Ketu and will be in conjunction with Rahu and Uranus. Saturn will give stability to Jupiter, providing control over impulsivity that comes easily in the Mars ruled sign of Aries; it will put the breaks on any and Ketu can add an element of mysticism and spirituality. Jupiter in conjunction with Rahu forms a “guru chandal yoga”. Both Rahu and Jupiter are about expansion so new doors may open, but Rahu can make this about an opportunity, challenge or temptation.
